Republicans: IRS scandal shows agency 'rotten at the core,' needs major reform - Fox News

The IRS targeting Tea Party groups and other conservative-leaning political organizations has reignited calls for reform and the argument among Capitol Hill Republicans that the federal government has become too big and out of control. Among those leading the calls for reform is Michigan Rep. Dave Camp, chairman of the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee, which held a hearing on the scandal five days after the targeting was made public and two days after the resignation of acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller. 'This systemic abuse cannot be fixed with just one resignation,' Camp said at the start of the hearing Wednesday.'This is a problem of the IRS being too large, too powerful, too intrusive and too abusive of honest, hardworking taxpayers.' The inspector general's report made public May 11 found that IRS employees at the agency's Determinations Unit from spring 2010 until about fall 2011 used keyword searches such as 'tea party,...

Knicks Losing the Scrum at the 3-Point Line - New York Times

Michael Conroy/Associated Press Paul George's defense against Carmelo Anthony has allowed the Pacers to avoid double teams and focus on stopping the Knicks' other 3-point shooters. The N.B.A. playoff series between the Knicks and the Indiana Pacers can be seen as a battle for the 3-point line. And, so far, the Pacers are winning. The Knicks had their most successful season in over a decade thanks in large part to their 3-point success. They made 891 3-pointers this season, setting a regular-season record. The Pacers also focus on the 3-point line, but defensively. They are more successful at stopping their opponents' 3-pointers than any other team in the league. They allowed 16.6 3-point attempts a game in the regular season, of which 5.4 a game were made, or 32.7 percent, the lowest in the league. In the second-round playoff series with Indiana, the Knicks have shot 31.8 percent (28 of 88) from behind the arc, down from 37.6 percent in the regular season. In thei...

Retired race car driver Richard "Dick" Trickle passed away Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 71. According to the Lincoln County, N.C., sheriff's department, the incident occurred at 12:02 p.m. ET at Forest Lawn Cemetery off Highway 150 East in Boger City. The Lincoln County Communications Center received a call apparently from the victim that "there would be a dead body and it would be his." Communications Center workers tried to place a return call to the number but did not get an answer. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Dick Trickle on his passing today," NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said in a statement released by the sanctioning body. "Dick was a legend in the short-track racing community, particularly in his home state of Wisconsin, and he was a true fan favorite. Personalities like Dick Trickle helped shape our sport." Blackhawks 4, Red Wings 1 - Yahoo! Sports

CHICAGO -- Snapping a 1-1 tie that existed from the middle of the first period, the Chicago Blackhawks exploded for three goals in the third period to trounce the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in Wednesday's Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Johnny Oduya put the Blackhawks in front 8:02 into the final period. A 15-foot wrist shot resulted in his second goal of the postseason. Marcus Kruger increased Chicago's lead to 3-1 at 11:23. Kruger was in the right place at the right time, grabbing a rebound and putting it past out-of-position Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, an in-close shot from just left of the Red Wings' net. The goal was Kruger's second of the playoffs. With 49 seconds remaining in the game, Patrick Sharp scored his team-leading sixth goal of the postseason into an empty net. The game continued a trend for the Blackhawks from the opening playoff round against Minnesota, in which lesser-known players came up with big goals as opposed to regu...

Google I/O 2013 Is All About Cleaning Up the Mess and Filling In the Gaps - TIME

Email Print Share Facebook Tumblr LinkedIn StumbleUpon Reddit Digg Mixx Delicious Google+ Google's I/O conference keynote was, in many ways, the opposite of what we expected. Google did not announce any new hardware ' no new Nexus 4 phone, upgraded Nexus 7 tablet or new Chromebook ' nor did the company reveal a new version of Android. Wilder rumors about an 'X Phone' from Motorola and an 11-in. (28 cm) tablet from Samsung did not materialize. Instead, Google spent about half of its annual developers conference focusing on, well, developers, and the tools they need to make better apps. The rest of the time, Google spent announcing improvements to core Web services, such as Search, Maps and Google+. The biggest new product launch was arguably Google Play Mus...

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. ' A South Florida luxury auto dealer told Yahoo! Lawmakers outraged over another alleged sexual misconduct case in military - Fox News

May 2, 2013: Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel speaks at the Pentagon in Washington.AP WASHINGTON ' Lawmakers say they're outraged that for the second time this month a member of the armed forces assigned to help prevent sexual assaults in the military is under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct. The back-to-back Army and Air Force cases highlight a problem that is drawing increased scrutiny in Congress and expressions of frustration from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Lawmakers said it was time for Hagel to get tough with the military brass. "This is sickening. Twice now, in a matter of as many weeks, we've seen the very people charged with protecting victims of sexual assault being charged as perpetrators," Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said. "It's an astonishing reminder that the Pentagon has both a major problem on its hands and a tremendous amount of work to do to assure victims -- who already only report a small fraction of sexual ...

Demi Lovato Opens Up On Demi, Hangs With Lovatics And Draws Dirty Pics - MTV.com

Demi Lovato wanted a really special place to celebrate the release of her brand-new album, out Tuesday (May 14). She spent the morning with her mom blasting Demi and driving around New York City, but she decided to make a pit stop at MTV to hang out with her fans for an extra-fun release party. In the half-hour that was "Demi Lovato: Live From MTV," Lovatics got a breakdown of the album's songs, asked the singer questions and played charades. And, you know, it was Demi, so of course we were going to get a down-to-earth interview with heart-to-hearts and honest answers. But when it came to games with the audience, we weren't really expecting her to get raunchy. Along with playing "kittyoke," MTV's version of karaoke that only uses "meows," Demi sat down with an iPad to draw out the titles of her songs for the Lovatics to guess. For "Made in the U.S.A.," she drew a American flag, which fans got right away. Easy peezy! But when...

Tiger Woods wins Players Championship - CBS News

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida Tiger Woods had the last word against Sergio Garcia by winning The Players Championship on Sunday. Woods ended a weekend of verbal sparring with Garcia by doing what he does best - closing out tournaments, even if he let this one turn into a tense duel over the final hour at the TPC Sawgrass. Tied with Garcia with two holes to play, Woods won by finding land on the last two holes for par to close with a 2-under 70. If only it were that simple for the Spaniard. Garcia was standing on the 17th tee shot, staring across the water to an island as Woods made his par. He took aim at the flag with his wedge and hung his head when he saw the ball splash down short of the green. Then, Garcia hit another one in the water on his way to a quadruple-bogey 7. He completed his stunning collapse by hitting his tee shot into the water on the 18th and making double bogey. Woods was in the scoring trailer when he watched on TV as Swedish rookie David Lingmerth missed a...

New York's One World Trade Center spire finally goes up - Los Angeles Times

New York City can once again claim to be home to the tallest building in the country, and the Western Hemisphere for that matter. On Friday, workers topped off the new One World Trade Center building with a spire making the structure 1,776 feet tall, symbolizing the year the United States was born. The finishing touch, performed by New York construction company Tishman, involved workers securing the final two portions of the spire with 60 bolts at 1,701 feet, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site. PHOTOS: Spire installed on WTC tower Loud applause and shouts erupted from construction workers assembled below as the huge, silver spire was gently lowered and secured into place. The building stands at the site where the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks destroyed both the 110-story twin towers. 'It's a pretty awesome feeling,' Juan Estevez told The Associated Press from a temporary platform on the roof of the tower where he an...

Editor's note: There's so much that's beautiful, funny, smart and informative on the Internet. Problem is, there's also a bunch of garbage. Here's the best of the web right now: 1. 'The Voice' recap: Stripped Down - Entertainment Weekly

Image credit: Trae Patton/NBC VOICE OF AN ANGEL Team Adam's Sarah Simmons has a breakout performance with Sarah McLachlan's "Angel." Before we get to the excitement that is the first round of live playoffs (yay!), I have something I need to get out, confessional-style: I don't know how I feel about Usher. On the one hand, I think his training methods are really cool, and they seem to produce good results. On the other hand, I really hate when coaches refuse to say anything good about other contestants in hopes that America will somehow side with them. You want to win, I get that. But give credit where credit is due, Usher, and not just to Judith Hill.Another note: If your strategy is giving your team very recognizable songs to sing, I might consider re-working things. Whitney Houston and Phil Collins in one night? I know the motto is go big or go home, but there is such a thing as too big. Okay, I digress. Let's dive into the madness that pitted the...

Top White House Aide Has A Secret Beer With Rep. Paul Ryan - TIME

Pete Souza / The White House President Barack Obama meets with Chief of Staff Denis McDonough in the Oval Office, Jan. 25, 2013. On April 10, the day President Obama released his 2014 budget, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough held a secret meeting with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan at a K Street restaurant, Brasserie Beck, to talk, among other things, about possible resolutions to the deficit reduction standoff. As I report in this week's TIME magazine, an article that is only available to magazine or tablet subscribers online, the meeting was productive, even if it produced no breakthroughs. 'He's a Minnesota Irish Catholic guy, and I'm a Wisconsin Irish Catholic guy,' Ryan told me, after the conversation. 'It quickly dawned on me that we can work together.' DQed Prep Runner's Finish Line Gesture Unrelated to Faith - Runner's World Newswire

The religious liberties of a Texas high school runner have not been violated by athletic officials, the University Interscholastic League announced on Monday. As we reported last week, Derrick Hayes anchored the Columbus High School 4 x 100-meter relay team to victory at an April 27 meet that served as a qualifier for the state championships. The team was subsequently disqualified because of Hayes' gesture as he crossed the finish line. Although officials said Hayes had violated a rule against excessive celebration, his father claimed that Hayes' gesture of pointing a finger upward was an act of faith, an apparent giving of thanks for the team's victory. The story received national attention as people debated whether the school rule violated students' rights to express their faith. Hayes and his parents now say Hayes' gesture was unrelated to his religious faith. "Although I am very thankful for all God has given me and blessed me with, on Saturday, A...
